Numbers of players mean nothing if you went on numbers then the pc is the best computer in the world and windows is the best operating system.

Running a pol of random people might give an indication as to the worth of a game but a better result might be from experts who could judge the games on a number of factors and player base being just one of them.

Never played wow never wanted too it looked very cartoony and ugly when I last looked at it a couple of years back, though I believe it looks a whole lot better now.

Since I am still playing GW after 4 years plus I guess it does have something of what makes a great game.

How can a poll with about 11k voters in the realm of mmos be taken seriously?

edit: No offense @ Rubi and Shawn.

I thought Massively was another Guild Wars fansite.

Biased polls ftw.

Then again, it says decade, so I assume from 2001-2010. If you count GW in it's early years, it is. But right now, GW is amongst the worst possible MMO's to place, I would even place it after Runescape.

Polls can be biased, as others have said, depending on where the poll was done and it's audience.
Aka - A poll on a Splinter Cell board pitting Splinter Cell vs MGS.
SC will most likely win the poll. (I've seen that happen. lol.)

I think it should be top, but that's my opinion. I've never invested as much time into any other MMO game compared to GW, and for me that is quite a feat. I enjoy it and it's play style, as well as talking with the people I've met on the game. (And yes, I've played WOW, LOTR-I love LOTR btw, but the game was like every other mmo, SW, etc.) Typical MMO's bore me, but I always come back to GW.

If they want more accurate results, they need a broader voter base.

That's funny because the people who think A.Net craps rainbows and can do absolutely nothing wrong are the ones who I find most annoying.

Holy crap I didn't even believe that poll was a real Massively poll. I remember looking at the polling options and they were pathetic... all over the place. ArenaNet was listed for best MMO studio alongside Blizzard and while Blizzard was listed for worst MMO studio of the decade ArenaNet was for some reason not even on the list.

This is one of the worst polls I've ever seen an online publication do in relation to the gaming industry. The only thing this poll proves is that Massively is a ghetto publication that is yet to build up any credibility for themselves. They couldn't even be consistent in their insanely bizzaro polling options and that's before we even criticise the credibility of internet polling in the first place.

If you read Massively's coverage of GW and GW2 you'd think the ArenaNet developers are magical unicorns that crap out rainbows.

If you're poll has obvious bias and seriously flawed options before people even vote, it's nothing but a joke. I'm honestly curious how closely related Massively is to ArenaNet PR.

To quote the first comment:

Wow. Some people need to lay off the haterade. It's a public website poll, not anything to rage over. It explicitly says at the MMO of the decade poll that gamers who visit Massively prefer Guild Wars, nothing wrong with that...

Also, some of you sound too alike.

My advice go get some milk and take a nap, if you really get this upset over a fan poll.

I'm not upset over a fan poll. I couldn't care less. All my post stated was that I found people who thought A.Net could do no wrong to be annoying, and that was a response to the person complaining about the community having a lot of whiners. I'd rather have a community full of people who admit when the company in charge of the game is making a mistake and express their disdain with specific changes, then a community who brown noses the company every chance they get and thinks whatever they do is the greatest thing to ever happen.

So my suggestion is for you to read things in context and not try to make more of a sentence then what it was.

Before people get too excited about the results, it should be pointed out that none of the above was a strong competitor in all categories.

I am surprised about StarTrek Online as I am an Admin of a fansite and good going GW not GW2 of coarse.

There votes are different on this site as PWI has the most votes even Wow beats GW.

I was personally surprised it didn't take top honours in every category it was nominated in. What would you even do in that game? I suppose flower farming and gold farming wouldn't be all that different...

Making long posts about not caring doesn't help the context. But the quotes were directed at the similar wordings used, my comment below was more of a general statement regarding those that can't come to terms with how a fan poll works (hint: they're always biased).

Also, I've never heard of many of the games in those polls, I was actually surprised to see such diversity.

Well deserved awards. I myself being a gamer, I have played WoW and RuneScape.

Ugh... do I need to explain why GW is better than RuneScape? Only thing RuneScape has is professions, which means its a nice game to play if you want to jack off while fishing.

When I played WoW, I hated it, I was just addicted to it so much that I thought I was enjoying myself, and I hardly played it!! Talk about balancing issues... ffs. I hope people realize that WoW really isn't that fun of a game, Blizzard just develops it to be as addicting as possible. The PvP is flawed and inbalanced. People complain about inbalanced in GW? Try playing WoW PvP after playing Guild Wars and you'll want to murder blizzard.

Their community is larger, not better. Again, they purposely make their game addicting. Everything in that game is grind. To get the BEST items PvE wise, you have to do a raid, which normally takes like 2-3 hours depending on how retarded your group is. Each character has like 10 different pieces of armor they can wear, meaning there is a lot. The best gear comes from 25 man raids, which means there are 25 other players wanting gear as well. So you spend 3 hours in a raid trying to get 10 pieces of armor and you get nothing. Oh well, rinse and repeat right? Oh, but you have to wait an entire WEEK or so to do the raid again. There's also the flight paths that take ages to... maneuver? Not to mention the game tries to make the flight paths visually appealing (lol @ WoW being visually appealing), so they take longer than just getting to the destination. It also takes like 8 days to get ONE CHARACTER to the max level. Oh but it's okay you're max level and can do anything right? Nope, one of the major inbalances in the game is the fact that PvP rewards improve your character, meaning the best players will always be better than the worst players. That sounds reasonable, but it shouldn't come down to being gear wise in PvP. You hit the max level, jump into a battleground, and get raped until you have enough honor to improve your character. That is just for PvP, and honor grinding is horribly slow. So I hope you don't mind dying. Also, to have a chance in the highest raids for the best dungeons, you have to farm the other raids to get the gear to have a chance, which is the same crap. 3 hours killing bosses to get 10 pieces of gear and having to wait a week or so to do it again.

Basically, it takes roughly 80 days to "max out" one character. And that's what people go for. Then when they reach the end game, what is there to do? Some quit, others make an alt and do it again. Unlike Guild Wars, making an alt, even if you just want to pvp, requires you to do boring ass grinding to get to the max level, which takes around 8 days.

Honestly, I notice a lot of players play the game to achieve rather than actually have fun. It's why I played RuneScape, and what kept me playing WoW until I woke and realized how freaking boring the game was. Greedy Blizzard wants money over actually keeping their players entertained. The whole reason you have to wait so long and play 80 days to max out ONE CHARACTER is because it keeps the players subscribed. As long as they want to achieve max status, players will keep throwing away their money to play WoW when the game feels more like a chore rather than entertaining, and that's what blizzard wants.

Also, Guild Wars has a much more dynamic storyline and lore than Warcraft. The Warcraft RTS series was actually entertaining, and the lore made sense. Now Blizzard's way of making the lore is to try to compete with GW2 (the whole cataclysm thing was obviously an attempt to steal GW2's lore and they rushed the game). While playing WoW, there is no lore until you reach high end raids, in which their lore is just killing some stupid boss. There are no missions. The quests are as boring as "go kill these bears for their hearts. I need 8 because I'm a wierd person that likes bear hearts (which have annoyingly low drop rates, again, to keep players subscribed as long as possible)".

Now about the community... hmmm. Guild Wars has its handful of idiotic players, but the Guild interactions are better than WoW's. My experience with WoW was this.

Me: LF guild!"
Guild: join ours we do raids!
Me joins guild
Guild: lets do this raid

the raids starts, me accidentally aggros something. Me gets G kicked and has a bad reputation on the server based on one accident.

Okay, that didn't happen, but let's just say that guild members had a tendency of hating on each other and were only there to get down to business. Of course, this happens in GW as well, but the thing is people are constantly flaming and starting arguments in WoW. Just something about the WoW community, even on forums, made me turn into a prick after playing the game. Normally I played for fun, but even I find myself cussing people out on forums and stuff, all because of the stuck up attitude on WoW. From my experiences, it's no surprise that Guild Wars has the better community. There's more positive interaction with players.

Basically, I've never seen anyone that's played both games say that WoW is the better game. It's more addicting and time consuming, which is probably why they have such a massive population and keeps players subcribed. But when it comes to quality gaming, Guild Wars takes the cake, and these "awards" aren't just something people threw out there to throw out there.

Sorry for my WoW rant, but I'm basically trying to explain how Guild Wars, even being way less known, won these awards and how WoW is basically just a big giant cigarette.
